REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES

The Hemmera team has had the opportunity to work with a number of complex contaminated sites scenarios involving a diverse range of industries and a wide variety of contaminants. These projects have provided Hemmera with an opportunity to apply unique, innovative, and practical solutions to site remediation.

In managing hydrocarbon contaminated sites, Hemmera has determined that in situ treatment can avoid extensive and costly site disruptions. One approach, developed for an oil and gas client in Nelson, B.C., helped to avoid excavation of a downtown street and highway.

In managing metal contamination, Hemmera is experienced in removing metals in groundwater passively without either pumping or above-ground infrastructure. Hemmera's remedial design and engineering team are among the best in Canada and have world class knowledge and experience with an innovative Canadian technology developed by the University of Waterloo for treating metal impacted groundwater.

This technology, called the Waterloo Barrier TM, has been applied at an operating bulk terminal on the Burrard Inlet and has enabled the control of a hydrocarbon plume and capture of contamination along the shoreline without disrupting operations. From pilot scale systems, to proof of concept installations, to one of the largest, deepest, and widest permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) in the world, clients as well as regulators and stakeholders have been pleased and impressed with the solutions advanced by Hemmera.

Results

In all cases, these projects have used an innovative approach to keep client projects moving and avoid complicated site disruptions, interferences with highways, waterways, or site operations.

Hemmera has monitored the performance of the system to ensure that, in addition to providing innovative solutions, they are achieving the intended results in terms of designed treatment levels and removal efficiencies. The end result is access to a diversity of remediation approaches to ensure enhancement of the environment and productive use of the land. In addition, the knowledge gained at these sites contributes to increasing awareness of innovative Canadian technologies that are used at other sites in British Columbia and around the world.

Such complex projects require excellence in science, engineering, and management. They also require an effective design team that includes the client, other specialists, and contractors on the Hemmera team. Hemmera has been able to facilitate such teams and it has produced measurable results in terms of maximizing environmental quality and minimizing economic impacts to business.
