PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS Project: Grandview Height Community Energy Plan Client: City of Surrey, BC Services: Sustainability Planning; Indicators and Energy Services; Alternative Energy Development and Options Analysis; Pre-feasibility Assessment (economic, environmental, and technical); Environment Assessment and Management; Geoexchange Options Analysis; Municipal Policy Planning, Zoning Bylaw Integration, and Land Use Planning. Goal: To provide the Grandview Heights Neighbourhood Citizen’s Advisory Board with the environmental, engineering, energy, and economic data needed to make well-informed decisions to achieve Grandview Heights Development’s objectives around sustainability and energy efficiency. Our Work: The Grandview Heights Neighbourhood within the City of Surrey, British Columbia is currently in the process of assessing energy efficient technologies to include within their community planning process. Geoexchange was identified as a supported and requested alternative energy by the Citizens’ Advisory Board and they requested a technical feasibilityand planningstudy for geoexchange energy options within the community. Hemmera’s multi-disciplinary team of environmental scientists, geologists, engineers,andland use planners were contracted to quantify resources, prepare design options, provide cost analysis of geoexchange and conventional heating and cooling systems,integratedesignswithin the existing Land Use Plan and estimate greenhouse gas reductions. Hemmera undertook a site examination to assess the geology, hydrogeology,surface water,development constraints,regulatory and building considerations thatdetermine the suitability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of geoexchange options. These factors may also enable further energy savings through hybrid combinationswith other alternative energy sources such as solar, as well as integration with high-performance green building designs and sustainability strategies.Hemmera’s study also identified policy tools to promote early adoption and advises on how to structure the utility to maximize benefits to the City and general public.  Results: Hemmera’s expertise in geoexchange and site specific research provided the Citizens’ Advisory Board with the detailed information they needed to make well-informed decisions to achieve Grandview Heights Development’s objectives around sustainability and energy efficiency.
