PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS Project: Peace District Wind Energy Client: Finavera Renewables Inc. Services: Vegetation Assessment,Wildlife and Habitat Assessment,Aquatic& Fisheries Assessment,Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and recommendations for mitigation, public consultation, Regulatory Approvals Process Management for BC Environmental Assessment Act (BCEAA), Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). Goal: Toconduct baseline wildlife and habitat studies, consult with the public and undertake environmental assessments toenvironmental approvals forseveral proposed wind energy projects in the Peace Region of BC. Our Work: During the winter and spring of 2007 Hemmera biologists have been participatingin comprehensive wildlife studies for windenergy projects in the Peace District of British Columbia. These detailed studies are collecting critical information for environmental assessment reports being preparedfor provincial and federal regulators for assessing wind farm developments and their associated impacts. Within the project study areas, Hemmera biologists haveconducted wintertracking studies to determine use by caribou, moose and othermammals, followed by spring raptor migration andnight time bird migration studies using remote radar surveying techniques.Summer studies include vegetation, habitat aquatic and fisheries assessments. Hemmera isleading the environmental assessments for thesewindenergy projects, and works closely with local experts and First Nations on the wildlife studies. Results: Information collected in the field is being communicated with project engineers and key agency reviewers. Project design and further field studies are being revised based on important findings prior to submission of the environmental assessment reports. This approach allows for mitigation of some potential effects at an early design stage and a good understanding of the data collection and constraints by agencies.
