COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Hemmera is passionate about contributing to the communities in which we live and work. Here are just a few of our initiatives:

  • Robert Bateman Get to Know Program - Hemmera is a sponsor of the Robert Bateman Get to Know Program, an initiative spearheaded by the famous Canadian wildlife artist to help inspire our nation’s youth to connect with nature. By encouraging youth to better understand the plants and animals around us, the program takes important steps towards raising a generation who will care for the environment. Bateman developed the program on the back of research revealing that youth recognize over 1,000 corporate logos but fewer than 10 species of wildlife in their communities. The Get to Know Program includes initiatives such as an annual youth art, writing and photography contest, and the provision of educational resources for schools.

  • United Way Campaign– Hemmera matches funds raised by staff during our annual United Way campaign. In 2007 Hemmera won the Quantum Leap Participation Award for raising $20,000 and having over 90% involvement from staff. Hemmera president, Paul Hemsley is also the Deputy Division Chair for Professionals, Campaign Cabinet, United Way.

  • Commuter Challenge Hemmera placed within the top ten nationally in the 2008 Better Environmentally Sound Transportation’s (BEST) Commuter Challenge. Many of our staff members rose to the challenge of leaving their vehicles at home for one week by taking a sustainable mode of transportation. During the rest of the year Hemmera supports a range of initiatives to encourage sustainable transportation, including ridesharing and telecommuting.

  • Run for the  Cure -  In October each year, Hemmera participates in the Canadian Breast Cancer Society’s Run for the Cure. This is the largestsingle day event to raise funds for breast cancer. In 2008, we raised over $2,000 for cancer research, awareness and education programs.

  • Bowl for Big Brothers Hemmera has a long tradition of participating in the annual Bowl for Big Brothers campaign, helping to raise funds for this important mentorship program. We are proud to help support the Big Brothers vision of ensuring that every child who needs a mentor has a mentor.

  • Sun Run - Every year Hemmera sponsors a corporate team in the Vancouver Sun Run, Canada’s biggest community run. The Sun Run supports children’s literary programs around BC, and it also builds strong team spirit amongst Hemmera staff members, who train together through the spring.

  • Environment Committee -Our corporate Environmental Management Plan covers a range of initiatives to help us minimize our environmental footprint. Company social activities such as ‘Green Potlucks’ and Earth Day celebrations also work to promote sustainability.

  • YMCASenior staff members have donated their time and engineering expertise over the last three years to redevelop a new YMCA childcare facility in East Vancouver. The new daycare centre has a range of programs to support the healthy development of children in the community.

  • Science World - Hemmera is in its seventh year of partnership and support with Science World. Eric K. Pringle, Vice President at Hemmera, is a member of the Champions Circle, which is a group focused on promoting science and technology to our province’s youth.

  • H.R. MacMillan Space Centre - Another initiative to support the local science community is involvement with the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. Eric K. Pringle serves on the Board of Directors for the Space Centre, providing input into strategies and sustainability practises to support the non-profit organization.
