For the BC Ferries terminal facility in Nanaimo, BC, Hemmera provided the complete mechanical design for a closed ocean-loop geoexchange system. Geoexchange, also known as geothermal heat pump technology, captures the thermal energy of the ocean, using it as a source of freely available, clean energy.
Our services included determining the size of ocean loop required to deliver the desired benefits, and providing precise specifications for the loop construction and installation. We also commissioned the installation and provided technical support to the prime mechanical consultants for the selection of mechanical room equipment. Working with the contractor, we ensured that the ocean loop installation was safe, secure and robust. In addition, we provided input for the environmental assessment, and collaborated with the regulatory bodies on measures to minimize the negative impacts on sensitive ecosystems.
