Corporate Social Responsibility
At Hemmera, we embrace our corporate responsibilities to our people, to the communities where we live and work, and to the environment. These responsibilities are part of the fabric of the company. We are active participants in our communities, and contribute to many worthy causes.
Personal Contributions to our Communities
Hemmera staff members participate in many external events, inside and outside of working hours. In addition to our annual United Way campaign, Hemmera supports and participates in a number of community events, including the Vancouver Sun Run and Bowling for Big Brothers.
The United Way
Hemmera commits $5,000 annually to our United Way campaign. In 2007, Hemmera won the Quantum Leap Participation Award for raising $20,000, with over 90% staff involvement.
Vancouver Sun Run
Every year, the Hemmera team takes part in the Vancouver Sun Run, Canada’s largest community run, in support of children’s literacy programs around BC. Hemmera supports and sponsors the team.
Bowl for Big Brothers
Hemmera has a long tradition of participating in the annual Bowl for Big Brothers campaign, and we are proud to support Big Brothers’ vision of ensuring that every child who needs a mentor has one.
Hemmera contributes to a variety of groups and initiatives through pro bono work, executive positions on boards, and donations. Some of the organizations we are proud to support include: the Science World Rejuvenation Committee, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, the BC Environment Industry Association, the Vancouver Board of Trade Sustainability Committee, and the BC Chapter of the National Brownfield Association.
H.R. MacMillan Space Centre
The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre (HRMSC) is a valuable centre for the local science community. Hemmera Vice President Eric K. Pringle has served on the HRMSC Board of Directors since 2008. In 2010, he was appointed to Chair of the Board, and he provides input into strategies, direction, fund-raising and sustainability practices for this non-profit organization.
Hemmera Vice President Eric K. Pringle is a member of Science World’s Champions Circle, a group that promotes science and technology to youth.
Supporting Future Generations
Hemmera promotes environmental education, and aims to inform and inspire upcoming generations toward environmental awareness and sustainability. Hemmera offers student employment opportunities through co-operative education plans that provide direct hands-on experience. Our people also make presentations to students and attend environmental education events.
Sustainability is one of Hemmera’s core values; we promote sustainability both within our operations and with our clients and partners. Throughout the year, Hemmera supports a range of initiatives to encourage sustainable transportation, including ridesharing and telecommuting.
Hemmera’s Environment Committee
Our staff-driven Environment Committee identifies and manages Hemmera’s environmental footprint through collaborative execution of our Environmental Management Plan. The committee’s initiatives combine policy and procedural implementation, positive engagement, and awareness campaigns.
BEST Commuter Challenge
Hemmera placed first overall within BC in our category in the 2012 Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) Commuter Challenge. Many of our staff rose to the one-week challenge of leaving their vehicles at home and using sustainable modes of transportation.
